Use of Deception in HamletHamlet is a play by William Shakespeare about a prince named Hamlet who is spoken to by the ghost of his deceased father, telling Hamlet to kill his uncle Claudius (the new king) because Claudius killed him. The story revolves around Hamlet's dillema on how to kill his uncle while being deceptive enough so that no one discovers the ghost. This essay will prove how deception is often used in Hamlet for many reasons. Claudius uses deception to protect himself from being prosecuted for his crime of murdering the king. No one knows what the problem is with Gertrude because she deceives everyone by remaining secretive all the time, keeping everyone from knowing anything. Using quotes from the book, I will prove how these two (Claudius and Gertrude) and a few others, use deception for different reasons and in different ways. Most of the time it's about protecting someone, or himself, because he believes the truth will do more harm than his lies. Claude deceives everyone in different ways and at different times, always and only to protect himself when everyone finds out that he killed the king. We can't really say that he deceived Gertrude or not because we still don't know if she knows about Claudius' murder of the king or not because it's part of his own deception, but we do know that he deceived the people and Hamlet himself (before speaking to the ghost). This next quote comes from the ghost of the king condemning Claudius for the murder: "If ever you loved your dear father, take revenge for his vile and most unnatural murder" (p. 57, act 1, scene 5, lines 29- 31). This quote proves that Claudius actually committed the murder. The next quote is from Claudius himself after the funeral and wedding, giving a speech about the king's death and the whole deal with Fortinbras, "To our most valiant brother, so much the worse for him" (p.21, act1 , scene2, line25)." This quote shows that Claudius obviously doesn't have much remorse for his dead brother and might be hiding the fact that he killed him. And we all know what that means... What's that mean?! This means that he is actually the rat and the villain in the play Hamlet's deception, perhaps the cruelest of all. of Claudius, she's the one who killed everyone..
