  • Essay / Genetically modified organisms and how they...

Modified AmericaFood is an essential part of daily life without which we could not survive. Every day we make choices about what we put into our bodies. There are countless varieties of foods to choose from to meet the diverse tastes of a growing population. Almost all foods require a label explaining the ingredients and nutritional value allowing consumers to make informed decisions about what they consume. However, many may not wonder where this food comes from or how it was produced. Unfortunately, there's more to food than what you see. Since 1992, "the United States Food and Drug Administration has ruled, based on woefully limited data, that genetically modified foods are 'substantially equivalent' to their non-genetically modified counterparts" (Why Support Labeling). Advocates of genetically modified foods have promised to create more nutritious foods that can grow in harsh climate conditions and ultimately end world hunger in anticipation of population growth. There is very little evidence to support these claims and study after study has proven otherwise. Not only are genetically modified crops dangerous to eat, but their growing practices are harmful to the environment, and multinational corporations are putting farmers out of business. The intent of the process is to create a new beneficial trait, such as creating its own pesticide or making it immune to herbicides. This would allow crops such as co...... middle of paper ...... to suffer the irreparable damage that could occur if the problem is ignored. Works Cited “Agent Orange”. History.com.
