Essay / The Singular Life of Alber Nobbs Book vs. Film
The Singular Life of Alber Nobbs tells the story of a 19th-century woman who dresses to survive. Albert Nobbs' film version is similar to the short story in many ways. Albert Nobbs lives his normal life until an encounter with Mr. Page causes him to rethink the situation. There are several instances where the film deviates from the short story. The (AN) is told through the framework of a man telling the story to his friend. Unlike the film which is its own singular story. Although the story is explored through different mediums, the same basic story of Albert Nobbs' life remains. Albert Nobbs in (GC) and (AN) explores loneliness, the effect of identity on life and the secrets formed to survive. The (GC) takes several liberties in adapting the film to a more contemporary audience. The story behind why Albert Nobbs and Hubert Page became men is changing. In the (GC) Albert Nobbs became a man because of his rape. He decided that it was not easy for a woman to survive alone in Ireland. Contrary to the news, Albert chooses to become a man in order to become a waiter in order to leave Temple Garden. He understands that men's jobs pay more than women's, and at the time he had the corresponding figure. Perhaps the reason for this change is that contemporary audiences would not understand Albert's reason for changing gender if the stakes were not higher. The rape implies that there is immediate danger for Albert. Compared to his desperate desire to leave a place he truly hates. In the case of Hubert Page in the short story, she decided to become a man after her husband returned. He made her life difficult after she had their second child, selling their house and leaving her. Once in the middle of paper......overtime, become a waiter and a man. She no longer identifies as a woman. This fact is true for Mr. Page. Even when they are alone at home, they continue to remain dressed as men. They've been playing this role for so long that they don't know how to be anyone else anymore. Their identity as a man is as much a part of them as their gender as a woman. Albert Nobbs' story asks what it means to identify with oneself. The film visually explores Albert's habits of being held captive by his secret. He is perceived as very calm and reserved. The short story explores this loneliness through her dream of having a companion and her own business. Although the film explores Mr. Page's friendship with Albert more than the short story explains, both show Mr. Page's impact on Albert's life. The film still keeps in the plot the pitiful element of Albert's singular life..
