Essay / King v. McCloskey: Does God Exist? - 1570
HJ McCloskey wrote a newspaper article in 1968 entitled "Being an Atheist" which denounced the existence of the Intelligent Designer. He uses different tactics to try to prove that God cannot exist. McCloskey shows that his argument for atheism is not valid because the evidence he proves in his article can be countered with well thought out answers provided by philosophers and Christians in order to show that it is possible that God exists. To illustrate the weaknesses of McCloskey's article, I will begin with his use of "evidence." McCloskey uses “evidence” in his arguments to question whether God is real. He believes that since it is impossible to prove that God exists, anything that cannot be proven is invalid and must be omitted (On Being an Atheist, 1968). Dr. Mark Foreman says that when discussing whether something is true, do not use "evidence" because regardless, nothing can be proven, including God (Foreman, 2012). Nothing can be positively proven in the entire universe, so the proof method is invalid. For example, I cannot prove beyond doubt that I am actually sitting, but that does not mean that neither I nor the chair exist. There is always the possibility that I exist, just like the chair, just as there is the possibility that God also exists. McCloskey should be careful in using "evidence" to establish that God does not exist, as other methods can be brought to light as to whether they can be accurately proven to be real. Furthermore, McCloskey asserts that since the universe exists, it cannot be a being who created it (On Being an Atheist, 1968, p. 51). C. Stephen Evans and R. Zachary Manis in Philosophy of Religion: Thinking About Faith suggest, in discussing the non-temporal form of the cosmological...... middle of article ......iefs of a smart designer but gives weak examples and using "evidence" to try to show atheism is the way to go. He does not give an unbiased view of atheism and uses emotional tactics to try to convince readers to his side. Evans and Manis provide strong arguments to combat McCloskey's damaging argument that he unsuccessfully proves that atheism is better than theism. Works Cited Craig, W.L. (2008).
