Have you ever tripped over an abandoned and worn-out Happy Meal toy while walking along the beachfront? Has it ever occurred to you that this waste can be a habitat for different microbes that have created their own community? For 60 years, humans have unconsciously created a new ecosystem in the oceans. This ecosystem is made up of different things, from toys and shoes to containers of orange juice and tubes of toothpaste. Called the plastisphere, scientists are now concerned about the environmental impact of this new ecosystem, not only on marine animals, but also on humans. The plastisphere Worldwide, around 245 million tonnes of plastic are produced each year. This figure represents 70 pounds of plastic thrown away each year for each of the planet's 7.1 billion people. The sad news is that of these 245 million tonnes of plastic per year, around 4.7 million tonnes of plastic waste accumulates in large, oval-shaped floating ocean waste patches. Even though we already know that pollution destroys the ecosystem, humans have little idea about how it can also create its own ecosystem. These billions of tiny pieces of trash floating around in different bodies of water are just like an ecosystem that humans have unintentionally created by using and throwing away too much plastic. As a result, insects and microbes that might have no place in the middle of the ocean suddenly found a new home amid all that drifting plastic. This is what we now call the “plastisphere”. A plastisphere is created when debris and waste are carried into the ocean. This debris will be broken down into pieces which will then be colonized by microscopic organisms. Once trapped, the plastic particles will remain in the middle of the ocean for the middle of the paper......through the fish's intestines. Revealing this information could help other scientists better understand the potential threat posed by these harmful bacteria and the role this new ecosystem plays in the larger ocean ecosystem, including its potential to alter the nutrients contained in the water. detailing this new ecosystem are still in their infancy, it is difficult for people to speculate on the potential effects of the emerging plastisphere on marine ecological environments. Although we are seeing detrimental effects of this new ecosystem on large marine animals, scientists studying this new ecosystem hypothesize that the plastisphere provides new opportunities for small organisms to thrive.
