  • Essay / Little Shop of Horrors Essay - 932

I saw the play Little Shop of Horrors by Howard Ashman on Saturday, December 7, 2013, at my school's Dubai International Academy. It was about how a unique but dangerous plant makes and breaks the business of Mushnik's Skid Row florists, and the romantic conflict as well as traitorous characteristics of Seymour Krelborn. The main themes of the play are horror and comedy. I think the production of the play was very successful as the audience was locked into the story and overall it was a very enjoyable and entertaining experience. The setting for the play Little Shop of Horrors was a complex type of scene. This resembled a turntable style, for example, after each major scene that changed the appearance of the florist's store, the turntable would rotate, changing the appearance and design of the store and adding, subtracting or changing the appearance of different accessories in the shop, like the mysterious plant. This added greatly to the atmosphere of the piece, as it showed the different stages of the store's development. The use of this type of set was surprising because the entire layout of the store changed very quickly, even though the actors were not always on stage. The actors' costumes were close to the 1980s style of clothing, using bright neon colors like orange, blue, pink and more. For some actors and actresses, their hairstyles date back to the 80s style. All of this added to the effect of the setting by enhancing the authenticity of the scenes. There were many uses of sound in the piece, for example voiceovers, sound effects, music, beats and much more. The sounds used made the scene more realistic and made the audience feel like they were there with the characters. Some sounds were... in the middle of a sheet... They played their roles completely differently, they spoke differently, they looked different, and their body language was different too. The casting of the characters was appropriate for their roles as they seemed like different people compared to when they were first cast. Few special effects were used in this piece. The only special effect used was the lighting effects. They were used to create more depth in the room. This worked really well because it made the room even more realistic. I think the play “Little Shop of Horrors” performed at DIA was very successful because it perfectly incorporated all the elements of the drama together and everything worked well together. The dramatic elements used in this play were: set, costumes, sound, lighting, characters and characterization, action units, dialogue, rhythm and timing, director's decisions and special effects.
