Essay / Josef Mengele - 1245
Josef Mengele is considered one of the most vicious and heinous killers in all of history. He tortured children, twins and women from Auschwitz. Mengele was raised to hate and taught that the German race was the master race. He was mentored by Nazi collaborators and learned about hereditary and racial deficiencies. Mengele's merciless murder earned him the nickname the Angel of Death. Born on March 16, 1911, Josef Mengele was born into a farming family. He was loved by the townspeople for his wit and humor. Wanting to make a name for himself in his community, he earned a Ph.D. in hereditary biology. Josef was mentored by a known Nazi collaborator, Otman Verschuer. Verschuer taught Mengele about eugenics, selective breeding and piqued Josef's interest. Mengele was raised to believe that the German race was the master race and would do anything in his power to prove it. Mengele's hatred for the "inferior races" was at the origin of his experiments at Auschwitz (Lagnado and Dekel). Mengele enlisted in the German army as a ground infantryman. He was serving his country in Russia when he was hit by a bullet. Unable to fight any longer, he was transferred to Auschwitz and appointed chief physician (“Josef Mengele USHM”). Mengele received letters of recommendation from his former mentors, thus obtaining the position of doctor at Auschwitz (Lagnado and Dekel). Mengele's job description included: selection, experimentation, and racial and hereditary studies. Mengele's pseudo-scientific research would only be made worse by his relentless and heartless assassination ("Josef Mengele 'German Doctor'"). Mengele's research into racial engineering drove him to madness. Mengle showed up to “work” every day in his best suit, without a hair out of place. Jo...... middle of paper ...... was proven dead in 1985 ("Josef Mengele"). In 1985, CANDLES led Auschwitz survivors on a tour of the camp. They walked the path of death and witnessed the chambers where their loved ones were killed. The survivors staged a mock trial of Josef Mengele, where they were finally able to tell their story (Lagnado and Dekel). Josef Mengele will go down in history as the most heinous and horrific killer of all time. Mengele tortured men, women and children and subjected them to atrocious conditions. Mengele's incessant killing and madness led him to a life of despair and hatred. Mengele had become mad with power and used science as an excuse to please himself. Josef Mengele contributed nothing to the scientific community, rather he practiced pseudo-scientific studies for fun. Mengele's murder and torture only confirmed his nickname the Angel of Death..
