The Cincinnati Police Department (CPD) participates in several initiatives related to community crime prevention. Social development is a key element of these initiatives. CPD prides itself on using problem-solving approaches in tackling crime and is heavily involved in youth engagement. The police chief focused on targeting at-risk youth and bridging the gap between youth and police. The Chief also emphasizes the importance of a working relationship with community citizens as well as municipal businesses and services. Overall, CPD has had a proven success rate in methods used in crime prevention and problem solving. The CIRV InitiativeOne program, the Cincinnati Initiative to Reduce Violence or (CIRV), (Ceasefire), targets gun violence in the city. The CIRV offers intervention for young people who have fallen into gang culture. The CIRV also offers young people an alternative to the gang lifestyle through various social interventions. This initiative was adopted after the launch of the Boston Gun Project in the 1990s. The primary goal of the CIRV is to deter chronic offenders involved in violent crime and to mitigate gang and group violence. The objective is to offer violent groups or gangs alternatives to violence. The CIRV has made professional training, educational opportunities and social programs available to these groups, and presents them as offering “a way to get off the streets”. If offenders refuse to take advantage of these opportunities, they are brought to justice. Several local law enforcement agencies have partnered with CPD to ensure the success of this initiative. This is important for success when using POP (Braga & Bond, 2008). (Braga & Bond, 2008) suggest that it is more difficult for smaller departments to achieve good results, particularly because most do not use computers or crime mapping. CPD is a larger department and officers use crime mapping, the SARA model, as well as empowering and teaching citizens how to prevent victimization by making their neighborhood a better place to live through to behavior modification (Schneider, 2010, p. 150). It conveys the message to citizens that preventing crime in a neighborhood is not only the duty of the police, but also that of citizens (Schneider, 2010, p. 12). POP is one of the best tools to use to combat crime and disorder, and a significant number of hot spot interventions have been shown to be effective (Braga & Bond, 2008).
