  • Essay / The Characters of Great Expectations - 2102

Look at three chapters of Great Expectations and discuss how Dickens creates characters that are both memorable and striking. Make sure to list at least three. The assignment I am writing about is Great Expectation, written in 1880-1881 and the author is Charles Dickens. The three main characters I'm going to talk about are Pip, Magwitch and Miss Havisham. Before that, I would like to write a little about the history of publishing in the time of Charles Dickens. At that time, book publishing was completely different from today. At that time they had a system called triple stage. This is because when people wrote books, they made three parts like volumes, and they sold them one after the other. This meant that at that time people were poor and could not afford to buy books except the rich. So they made three pieces and sold them one after the other. There was a hook at the end that made the reader want to buy the next volume of the book. The authors also made a lot of money this way. The characters in this novel are both strong and emotional. I will give a brief description of the character that I will discuss later in the assignment. Pip, an orphan, lives with his sister (she is married). He is very emotional. Magwitch is an escaped convict who has a good side as well as a dark side. And finally there is Miss Havisham who is around 50 years old and unmarried. It's because her husband left her on her wedding night. Pips' real name is Philip, he is an orphan who lives with his sister. Pip is a very emotional boy. We know this because when Magwitch threatens him, he will kill him if he doesn't bring the equipment he needs. Author Charles Dickens wrote that Pip must cry “partly to hold me back; partly to stop myself from crying. "It shows Magwitch threatening to beat him and Pip trying not to cry. Any boy in that situation would be scared and want to cry. Also, when Pip goes to play Miss Havishams with Estella (she is adopted by Miss Havisham), we find out that at the end of the visit, Pip is crying and angry and furious with himself because Estella was making fun of him, making Pip think she was superior to him. "while I was crying I kicked the wall and twisted my hair”
