  • Essay / Technologically advanced or just really addicted?

    During the Christmas period, Christmas advertisements dominate television channels. You won't see an ad for a scooter, basketball, or sidewalk chalk very often. This is the latest and greatest mobile phone, tablet or movie. Whether it is aimed at an adult, a teenager or a child, the public is faced with something technological. At twenty years old, it's hard to remember the days before cell phones, GPS and on-demand services didn't exist. I vaguely remember my mother wearing her pager and answering the “house phone.” These days, kids prefer playing video games to riding bikes, and teens are sharing their daily routines and experiences with the world on Twitter and Facebook. American society uses technology to function. Smartphones, coffee makers, microwaves, cars, computers: they are all part of daily life and most require electricity. Technology has led our world to vast discoveries that remained a mystery for thousands of years and helped create processes faster than manual manufacturing. Technology certainly makes life easier, but does it also make society lazy and dependent? I often see inspiring photos posted on Twitter by my peers, some of them saying "Live in the moment" decorated with teenagers raising their hands in the air to express their freedom. However, my generation is not living in the present moment. We always think about how the present moment will affect the next moment, for example, will this photo get a lot of likes? Technology is negatively impacting younger generations by demolishing mindfulness and creating a feeling of laziness and constant dependence on everything but ourselves.
