Essay / What is myasthenia gravis? - 1136
Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease, in which voluntary muscle groups fluctuate depending on their level of weakness. Although this disease affects several areas of the body, it most commonly affects the eyelid muscles, causing eyelid drooping and/or blurred or double vision. Away from complications in the occipital region, other symptoms include difficulty breathing and swallowing, altered eminence of the voice, increased risk of gagging and choking, weak cough and speech problems. Anyone, regardless of ethnicity or gender, can be diagnosed with this condition; however, it is more prevalent in women aged twenty to forty, with an average of twenty-eight, and in men between fifty and seventy. Antibodies are proteins used by the immune system to detect antigens that attack the body. Abnormal antibodies are present in the immune system of a person diagnosed with myasthenia gravis and can be detected in the blood. Although myasthenia gravis can cause a decrease in muscle strength over time, it can be treated with medications, therapies to improve muscle strength, and surgery to exclude the thymus gland. (Myasthenia Gravis Fact Sheet) (Myasthenia Gravis Basics) When analyzing this rare neuromuscular disease, scientists believe in the thymus because adults with the disease have a heavy, abnormal thymus. Having a large thymus which helps produce antibodies, plays a vital role in the formation of myasthenia gravis, a gland is rare because scientifically as one ages the gland decreases in size and is replaced by fat . Previously, the ratio of women to men with myasthenia gravis was three women to two men; with females predominating among young adults and males predominating among older adults. However, things have changed: as life expectancy increases significantly, men are more likely to contract this disease than women. (Sheth, Kevin)The prognosis for people with myasthenia gravis is quite bright; the reason being that most can be recovered to some extent from this morbidity. In patients with generalized weakness, the nadir of maximum weakness is usually reached within the first three years diagnosed with the disease. Therefore, those who survive their first three years of illness have a better chance of reaching a stable state or progressing in their health status. (Sheth, Kevin)
