Essay / Cyrano De Bergerac by Anthony Burgess and Edmond Rostand
Loyalty trumps loveAs popular author Nicole Yatsonsky says: “Your most loyal friends are the ones who will support you in your darkest times – because they are ready to brave the shadows with you. – and in your biggest moments – because they're not afraid to let you shine. Likewise, in the romantic and heroic comedy Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, Cyrano, a passionate and talented poet, cursed by an excessively long nose, helps Christian, a handsome but stupid man, to win the love of Roxane, the young girl at a time I've been pining for years. Through a series of correspondences between Cyrano (posing as Christian) and Roxane, Roxane falls deeply in love with Christian. In turn, Cyrano falls in love with Roxane. Despite his feelings for Roxane, Cyrano backs down and allows, even helps, the two lovers to marry. In Cyrano de Bergerac, playwright Edmond Rostand uses Cyrano's relationship with Roxane as well as his friendship with Christian to prove the theme that loyalty forms a stronger bond than love. To begin, Rostand proves the theme that loyalty forms a bond that proves more lasting than love through Cyrano's relationship with Roxane. At one point, Cyrano and Roxane remember their childhood at the Ragueneau bakery. Roxane fondly remembers: “Sometimes, when you had an injured hand, you ran to me and I was your mother” (Rostand 72; Act 2). Even before Cyrano became romantically interested in Roxane, the cousins had a strong friendship built on loyalty and a desire to care for each other. Now that Cyrano is in love with Roxane, his desire to help her remains strong, whatever the price. Putting his own interests aside, he helps the foolish Christian win Roxane's love. Even though Cyran...... middle of paper......, the deep allegiance that forms between the two friends proves greater than the romantic affection either feels for Roxane . Overall, Cyrano's loyalty to Christian and Roxane demonstrates the theme that loyalty forms a deep bond that extends beyond love. The pattern of loyalty shown between Cyrano and Roxane, even when love was not an object, illustrates the idea that being a reliable friend creates lasting relationships. As Nicole Yatsonsky explains, loyalty is a decision to stand by a friend through difficult times, even when it hurts; and when things are going well, loyalty is a willingness to be overshadowed.
