Essay / It's Time to Follow Your Heart - 688
Everyone gains satisfaction and happiness by getting what they desire, but also feels pain because of what an individual has gained. It's the same with love, when people think about being in a relationship, the majority will view it optimistically. However, this is not really fair; sometimes they will end up giving up something they have enjoyed for a long time. We can find two excellent examples in the stories of “Marriage is a private matter” and “Love must not be forgotten”. The main characters in both stories are struggling with marriage problems and trying to make it on their own. In one story, it is the son who chooses to marry the woman he loves, being disowned by his father. The other story is the opposite; the mother follows the traditional marriage, with which she ends up losing her true love. The story “Marriage is a private matter” introduces a conflict between traditional mentalities and modern mentalities. The father, Okeke, favors tradition and supports arranged marriage, but the son, Nnaemeka, wants to marry the one he loves. This then leads to a quarrel within the family between two opposing mentalities. This is the main problem that happened in the story. “'Marriage today is different...' (Nnaemeka) 'Look here my son,' his father interrupted, 'nothing is different. What we look for in a woman is good character and a Christian background.' » (Achebe, 190). The quote displays two different views of marriage. The father plans for his son to marry Ugoye, but the son loves Nene. In response to the conflict between son and father, Nnaemeka decides to go with her heart and marry Nene. By choosing this path, Nnaemeka finds herself faced with a difficult situation. “'I owe it to you, my son, as a duty to show you what is right in the middle of a paper... to marry this person. Marriage is not only a family-to-family agreement, but also an agreement between individuals. If a person is not happy in marriage, he will end up like the mother in the story “Love Should Not Be Forgotten”. At least that's how I would feel and I don't want to end up regretting it. It is clear that both stories, “Marriage is a Private Affair” and “Love Should Not Be Forgotten,” involve conflicts between tradition and the modernized spirit. sets. Both protagonists win and lose outside of marriage. Nnaemeka finds her true love, but loses her strong relationship with her father; while the mother loses her true love due to traditional mentality and learns a lesson from it. Both stories have a similar moral: wait for the right one and marry someone you love. Brigitte Nicole once said, “If you don’t follow your heart, you might spend the rest of your life wishing you had.”
