Essay / Oppression and Repression in The Yellow Wallpaper by...
In “The Yellow Wallpaper” is a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the narrator's oppression and repression is strictly based on gender role and marriage. The women we see in the story are expected to thrive at home, while her doctor husband has locked her in the room all day and gives her little contact with the outside world. This shows a lack of respect for married women. Maybe if her doctor husband understood her better, she could get better. Using perspective, setting, and irony, Gilman paints a picture of the number of women imprisoned by male authorities, as well as a realistic picture of the problem of human societies, gender roles, and marriage of African Americans in Civil War Medicine. From the beginning of the story, the narrator mentions that her husband does not understand what she wants and takes her opinions seriously. The narrator states in the sentences, “No wonder the kids hated it!” I should hate myself if I have to live long in this room” (Gilman 298). She says the kids hated that room and if she has to stay in that room, she must hate it too. In the following sentences, the narrator underlines the phrase that her husband says: "You know this place does you good," he says, "and really, darling, I don't care if I renovate the house just for three months ". 'rental' (Gilman 299). He says the room makes her feel better, even the kids and she hates that room. He doesn't care about renovating the house which only has three months left. Also, he thinks it will cost a lot of money to renovate the house and after something changed it would be other objects all over the house but in reality it's because he maybe doesn't care about what she really wants and the state of her marriage He refuses ... middle of paper ... his wife thinks for herself Most of the time when she asks John for something or tries. to say anything to him, he always ignores her. As a result, it becomes clear that the narrator's unhappiness seems directly linked to the fact that she is treated like a child even though her husband has confined her to the bedroom. upstairs which is a child's bedroom and is not allowed out of his cage Even though this story was written 120 years ago, it is still present in today's society. The household is run by a husband who financially supports the household, which leaves the wife to follow the husband's lead where the man of the house is always right. According to this story, her husband's treatment causes her to suffer mental illness because of the yellow wallpaper in her room and attitudes about how she should be treated. He makes her unhappy and never tries to understand what she wants to do.
