Dredful Fight For FreedomThe Dred Scott Affair was a dispute between Dred Scott and his owner Sanford. Dred Scott was a slave who was brought to free territory by his owner, from whom Scott attempted to claim his freedom. The conflict led to a Supreme Court ruling that any African American, free or slave, could not be a citizen of the United States. Therefore, African Americans did not have the right to sue in federal court. This meant that any previous attempts to end slavery were now invalid. The decision effectively ended the Missouri Compromise, creating a rivalry between the North and South, paving the way for the Civil War. In today's society, we face problems similar to those of the Dred Scott affair. One example is the debate over same-sex marriage. Who fights for human equality. Dred Scott began his fight for freedom when he tried to sue Emerson, his owner who had brought him to a free state. Previously, Missouri courts had heard more than ten other cases like Scott's and claimed them all free. Unfortunately, Scott failed to provide a witness proving that he was Eliza Emerson's slave, resulting in his case being thrown out. Scott was granted a second trial in which he and his family were claimed free. She did not want to lose the Scotts and appealed the case to the Missouri Supreme Court. The matter was delayed for some time and in the meantime Emerson moved to Massachusetts, leaving Scott in the possession of his brother, Sanford. In 1852 the case finally began and Scott was again rejected. For the third time in 1853, Scott sued, but this time in federal court. The jury sided with Sanford and Scott was again declared a slave. In a desperate and final act for freedom, Scott appears...... middle of paper...... and women. This is neither equal nor fair. This is similar to the Dred Scott case in the treatment of inequalities. Dred Scott was viewed differently because he was black. In same-sex marriages, people of the same sex are treated unequally because they are the same sex. Being black or loving someone of the same gender is not a choice. It's something you're born with and can't change. Why should people be punished for something they did not choose but were created to do? The Dred Scott Affair played an important role in slavery. This helped make people understand that the plan was not actually to get rid of slavery, but to spread it. The Dred Scott Affair helped spark the Civil War. He plays an important role in our history and changed the way African Americans are viewed. This decision will perhaps forever be known as the worst decision made by the Supreme Court..
