At the start of the Cold War (1945-1954), the United States was so dedicated to stopping the spread of communism that it completely ignored the potential ecological effects . of their strategic decisions, which means a total disconnection from contemplative ecology. During this period under the Truman administration, there was an overwhelming societal belief that national security concerns outweighed environmental security. In fact, the federal government has not been concerned about environmental safety, as evidenced by United States federal government spending for fiscal year 1950. No concern, which equates to zero dollars spent on "reduction pollution”, and the most appalling “protection of biodiversity and landscape” (the federal government has literally spent no money on the protection of biodiversity, speaking of an ecological disconnect). Compare this lack of money to the $10.8 billion spent respectively on pollution reduction and biodiversity and landscape protection in fiscal year 2010. The constant threat of World War III with the Soviets was on everyone's mind. The closest point to a war between the United States and the Soviet Union at the start of the Cold War was the Berlin Blockade, which began in June 1948. If the Soviets had shot down any cargo plane supplying West Berlin during the Berlin Airlift, World War II Three is believed to have begun just after the end of World War II. A few months after the blockade ended, the Soviets successfully tested their first atomic bomb and Mao Ze Dong's communist army defeated Chiang Kai Chek's nationalist army in the Chinese Civil War.
