    The purpose of this article is to better understand the needs of the homeless population and how the library can best help them. In this article, I also look at problem patrons, who may or may not be homeless, as well as some ways librarians have found to deal with them. Each homeless client has unique needs that can range from help with substance abuse to help obtaining a GED. The two most important roles a library plays in a homeless person's life are a place to get the information and help they need to improve their life and a safe, comfortable environment. A place to find a book and enter a new world, even if only for a short time, may be the best thing and perhaps the only thing a library can do for its homeless population. Libraries should focus on training staff about the needs of their area's homeless population and how to meet those requirements. Libraries must also identify and respond to the unique programming and policy needs of their patrons. Introduction and Overview This article focuses on research carried out in a number of articles on problem users, particularly homeless users. One of the questions this article attempts to answer is what the needs of homeless patrons are and how libraries can meet those needs. Although this study focuses primarily on homeless patrons, it also examines the emotional labor librarians experience when dealing with problem patrons. Librarians, like other employees who work with the public, must demonstrate professionalism when on the job.
