Essay / Egyptian Writing System - 647
After the development of civilization, society became more complex and people realized the importance of keeping records. The ancestors had not yet invented a writing system, so they could simply use cave paintings to record their daily lives until 3000 BC, Sumerian scribes invented cuneiform. One hundred years later, Egypt developed its flexible writing system called hieroglyphics. In this essay, I want to talk about three aspects of the ancient Egyptian writing system: the three types of writing, usage, and impact. There are three different types of ancient Egyptian writing system. Hieroglyphics were the first form of Egyptian writing and also the oldest from 3,400 BC to 396 AD. The ancient Egyptian word for hieroglyphs was "the words of God," so it's easy to see why they were primarily used by priests. Priests used hieroglyphs to write prayers, texts related to life after death and the worship of the gods. There are three main types of hieroglyphs. The first is the logogram, in which a word is written and read using a single sign. We can understand what this means by looking at the sign. The second is the phonogram, which is a sign or combination of signs representing a sound. The third category is determiners, which do not represent sounds and are not transliterated but are used to specify meaning. Hieroglyphs were very complex to understand because many logograms are also determiners and phonograms. However, the Egyptians realized this problem and therefore added a vertical line below the sign to remind them that it is a logogram. After that, they found that writing hieroglyphs took too long, so they developed a cursive script called hieratic. Hieratic is an adaptation ...... middle of paper ...... previously written. And the influence of the ancient Egyptian writing system was greater than we can imagine. The development of hieroglyphics was instrumental in the spread of ancient Egyptian culture. It was used as monumental art, as communication with the gods, and as a civilization to influence others. The Rosetta Stone is a stone containing the same text written in three different writing systems: hieroglyphics, demotic script and ancient Greek. . Scholars deciphered the other two texts by translating ancient Greek. Hieroglyphics were represented until the discovery of the Rosetta Stone so that we can understand their value today. Hieroglyphics continue to provide information about life in ancient Egypt today. In my opinion, the ancient Egyptian writing system is beautiful because it is an evolution from using events recorded with pictures to using words to write down events..
