What Defines a Greater Tragedy? Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are complex and dynamic characters who have tragic flaws. While Macbeth is extremely docile, Lady Macbeth is controlling and manipulative. Macbeth's fickleness leads him to become a traitor, a murderer and ultimately leads to his death. Lady's Macbeth's manipulative behavior leads her husband to do horrible things, leading to massive guilt and suicide. Overall, Macbeth's story is ultimately more tragic than that of his wives because his inconstancy leads to a less complete and meaningless life. Shakespeare helps his audience understand the remorse that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth feel by using hallucinations and visions. On the surface, the hallucinations represent the sanity of the hallucinator, however, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth's delusional state may also represent their remorse. Lady Macbeths begins as a manipulator, asking Macbeth, “I dare not wait, I will, like the poor cat according to the saying” (1.7.44-45).
