The Montresor characters from "The Cask of Amontillado" and the people of "The Lottery" both believe that they owe something to their people and are even ready to do so. kill for them. The townspeople want a good harvest, so they make a sacrifice of someone from the town to a higher power or to God who they believe will help them. Montresor wishes to preserve his family heritage and will uphold his family's motto. Montresor's characters and the townspeople, particularly Old Man Warner, are similar in that they both have an impaired sense of judgment encouraged by perverse morals and believe that the horrible things they do are justifiable . Both characters have a stubborn arrogance that makes them think. that they have good reasons for what they do.
