Essay / Personal Story: My Experience at Willow Elementary...
When I first saw Willow Elementary, I was shocked by how different it was from where I grew up. First, the school is located in the middle of a very urban neighborhood. I noticed there were people walking down the street every time I came. Also, they have a very small playground that doesn't have soccer nets or a baseball field like my school had. This surprised me because those were the two places I went to during recess and I couldn't imagine not having them. Then, the school is very small. It's basically a square and it's much smaller than the primary school I went to. Additionally, the teachers did not wear the same attire that I am used to. Most of the teachers at my old schools were dressed. The room itself is much smaller than the classrooms I'm used to too and I noticed that they didn't have individual desks, but rather tables close together like the ones in our classroom. beginning. This seems strange to me because I remember throughout elementary school we each had our own desk that opened so we could put all of our supplies in and keep them organized. Additionally, I saw very little space for a whiteboard and space for an overhead projector/overhead projector in the classroom. The students in the class were either African American or Caucasian. They have a dress code at Willow where students are supposed to wear a black, purple, or white shirt, but not all students do this and it is not a strict dress code. I noticed that most of the girls were very talkative and were eager to ask for help. There were, however, a few students who were very shy when I came to help them and seemed not to be interested in me helping them. I noticed that the two shy girls were both white. My own reactions from students have been that they have the passion and enthusiasm to learn, but it seems like something is missing. I can't yet say if it's the school itself, the lack of resources or maybe even something else. While I was in class, I was surprised by some things. First, the school has iPad carts and the teacher brought them out so students could practice letters on an app. However, based on my initial observation, I believe that students are receiving an inadequate education. I believe this because Willow received a red rating by the state and the teachers' goal is likely to teach to the test so that Willow receives a higher rating. I also say this because they don't have physical education classes provided by the school system. Instead, the YMCA created a program for some of its employees to become physical education teachers at the school and the school district does not fund them at all. Personally, I couldn't imagine primary school without physical education lessons and I believe that physical activity is very important, especially at primary level. In the elementary school I grew up in, all of us students always looked forward to PE class like it was lunch and the fact that the school district didn't offer PE class is very shocking and breaks my heart. Without physical education lessons, students would not be able to practice any physical activity and would not be aware of physical activity. But fortunately, the YMCA offered students a physical education class. Inadequate education is when teachers tell students what to think and do not create
