  • Essay / Analysis of inequalities in everyday life - 1049

Ordinary people, whatever their field of activity, face inequalities, from their homes to their workplace. This can take the form of denying girls the right to education, denying people the right to marry, refusing to provide services to a certain race, or favoring one person over another. Inequality is the condition of being unequal, lack of equality or disparity. This article will describe and examine the inequalities I faced in my workplace through my department manager. I work at a grocery store in the deli section where my manager has introduced a new rule by keeping a journal. My manager notes every wrong done by an employee, including when an employee forgets to complete a task or any time an employee is called out sick. On Sunday morning, February 16, 2014, I called my manager and told her that I could not come to work that day because I was sick. When I returned to work on Thursday, a colleague in my department told me that she discovered that my manager had written my name in her diary because I was sick. Upon further investigation, I discovered that she only wrote down the names of employees who were not loyal to her. Those devoted to her, especially two employees who do everything she wants them to do for her, she didn't write their names down when they both called in sick. I decided to talk to the employee representatives at my store about it. Additionally, this article will analyze my subjectivity which “refers to how a person’s perspective, experiences, and values shape their perception of their daily world” (Brock, Raby & Thomas, 2012 p. 35) about how I experienced inequality in my workplace. Inequality can affect us in one way or another, from person-to-person micro-interaction to macro-society middle of paper......workplace. I discovered the power of superiors over their subordinates, standardization and the concept of role taking. That people accept the unfair treatment they have witnessed as the norm in society. People view this as normal and have no reason to change or object to it. Additionally, no matter where you are, you will always face inequality, even from people you trust and are friendly to you. I learned by observing the interaction between my manager and my colleagues about how she interacts with them, who she gives the most favors to, who she is closest to, which is never written when a violation has taken place. I also learned from my discussions with my colleagues, from those who are not in favor of it and from this incident as well. It is important that I learned these concepts because it helps me understand the different sociological interactions in our society..
