Essay / An analysis of the speech in Hamlet by William Shakespeare
As for Act III, scene I, this scene begins in a room in the castle, where King Claudius, Queen Gertrude, Polonius, Ophelia, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern play . . To start thinking, King Claudius had asked Rosencrantz and Guildenstern if they had found any information that they could use to find out what is wrong with Hamlet. Although a gentleman, the two unfortunately did not have much information to understand what is wrong with Hamlet, due to his cryptic questions and answers. On the contrary, they now know that he is really crazy. However, they were able to reveal that when he was informed of the arrival of the players, he felt excited and wished that the king and queen would come to the room, in which they would do so. After that, to summarize this famous speech, he basically asks the famous question whether it is better to live or die. To make a comparison, he compares death to sleep, which doesn't seem so bad when you think about it. Not only that, but he also believed that we would escape a lot of suffering, like love. However, the problem is that we can end up having dreams, more specifically a nightmare. And having these nightmares wouldn't be pleasant, thus stating that maybe it's better to just endure the bad things you experience in life rather than die. However, at that moment, Hamlet then saw Ophelia reading a book, thus ending his speech. The two start to have a little conservation, then Ophelia springs into action. She had tried to return some letters that Hamlet had written to her when they were dating. However, Hamlet's reaction surprised her because he claimed that he never gave her anything. After that, he began to ask her the following question: if she was honest and beautiful, then she should be wary. As he claimed, beauty corrupts honesty, in which a big riddle to solve was revealing that he did indeed once love her, but that it was a lie. However, things got worse when he said that men should have no place in the world because they are all criminals, and he also gave advice to lock his father up. She started to pray. At first, I didn't really expect much like this. they continued to spy on Hamlet and see what is the cause of his condition. Only this time they were going to use Ophelia as willing bait, which would have seemed strange, but then I remember that she is the daughter of Polonius, always sucking up to the king just for her own gain. However, that's not what makes this piece so depressing, in my opinion. In fact, it was because of Hamlet's actions and speech that made him so depressing. On the one hand, he gives a famous speech in which he debates whether it is better to live or die. And yet, I think the conversation with Ophélie was even worse. Knowing that they both clearly love each other made this very heartbreaking because Hamlet was essentially arguing over Ophelia. In a way, I can actually feel this kind of sadness since my girlfriend recently broke up with me. Even though it wasn't a long term relationship, I will say that she was my first girlfriend that I ever had and the first to break up with me. Of course, that's life for you, but it was still heartbreaking, and that's what I think Ophélie felt. However, even though it ended in a dark way, I'm a person who still thinks it's not too late for the two to be a thing. Nevertheless, only time can tell, and all I can do is like Ophelia, and
