  • Essay / The Bonhoeffer Biography - 1535

The Bonhoeffer Biography: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy presents the vast contributions that Dietrich Bonhoeffer made during a life that was suddenly cut short. Bonhoeffer is remembered for his activity in an anti-Nazi resistance, founding the Confessing Church, creating many new theological ideas, and having the courage to enter a war zone to stop the ongoing elimination of innocents. Although he was hanged weeks before Germany's surrender and Adolf Hitler's conquest, Bonhoeffer left an important theological legacy. Bonhoeffer had an influence on theological studies. He contributed both negatively and positively. One aspect that many see as a negative contribution is his attempt to create a Christianity without religion. He philosophized that God is dead and many see this as a grudge against Christianity, although it remains a very interesting contribution to the faith as well as theology. Although he desired a faith without God, it sparked the beginnings of questions about the true meaning of God. Many theologians have attempted to answer this question, which has led to various new theological ideas as well as a better understanding of the Christian faith. (Kappelman, 2014) Another huge and positive contribution of Bonhoeffer is his theory on ethics. Bonhoeffer states that the goal of ethics for man should be to restore unity with God. Bonhoeffer means that our world is divided into many different areas: work, church, family, friends, etc. He explains how it is a person's duty to better understand themselves in each individual role as well as how different roles come together and clash. This will eventually lead us to once again cherish the world God created and its absolute... middle of paper ... and stand up for what is right. I feel like I can also take this opportunity to restart my faith and see Christianity from a whole new perspective. I want to look back to the history of my faith and the Bible to guide me in the redevelopment of my faith and discover where God and Jesus are really leading me. Bonhoeffer showed me that believing in God is more than just going to church, praying, and singing during worship. Being a disciple of God is much more. It requires knowledge, openness, acceptance and the ability to learn from my own mistakes. The main and complete message I took away from Dietrich Bonhoeffer is that I must trust God fully and give myself completely to Him. Bonhoeffer himself said, “We must be willing to be interrupted by God” and that is exactly what I expect. (“Quotes from Dietrich Bonhoeffer”, nd.)
