  • Essay / Aristotle's Theory of Friendship - 773

This is where the three types of friendship come into play. He also said that people like this are rare because they are alone few people have the capacity for this type of friendship. (p. 122 s6) He says that people can have many friends, but there is always a closer bond with someone. A friendship takes a long time to build and requires a lot of time. Finally, he affirms that friendships go far beyond justice, that where there is friendship, justice is not necessary, but where there is justice, friendship is justice, it is always necessary. He also says that friends must live together to form a friendship, otherwise they really only have good will. Finally, Aristotle talks about friendships being higher than justice, he argues that love in a friendship is higher in honor, and that people value being loved more than loving. People who honor will be more likely to seek either flattery or those with more power than they could obtain.
