Essay / Foreign trade with China - 2820
Since the 1970s, there has been a wave of liberalization in China, introduced by Deng Xiaoping. This is one of the main reasons for China's rise as one of the world's economic giants. During the last 25 years of the century, the Chinese economy experienced massive economic growth, which was 9.5% per year. This was of great significance to the country as it quadrupled the country's gross domestic product (GDP), thereby saving 400 million citizens from the threats of poverty. By the late 1970s, China was ranked twentieth in the world in terms of trade volume and was believed to be the world's leading nation in terms of commercial activities (Kaplan, 53). This further predicted that the country would record the highest GDP growth in the world. The massive increase in Chinese trade relations was fueled by the United States in 1979 through normal trade relations between the two countries. Furthermore, China's non-concession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001 also facilitated its trade activities with different countries, including the United States (Kaplan, 57). However, trade relations with China have become difficult due to massive trade imbalances in recent years, which have grown exponentially. Protectionist policies in the United States, particularly in Washington and Beijing, have put pressure on the Chinese to revalue their currency and protect it from counterfeiting, which could have negative effects on trade relations.
