    The importance of sleepResearch question:Why do we sleep?Literature review:Although no one asks why we actually sleep, we know at some point that without sleep we would be angry, weak, irritated and a number of other negative emotions. There are many fact-based theories that one way or another explain why we sleep, but none of these theories have been proven yet. According to Harvard Medical School (2008), sleep makes everyone feel better. Their theories about why we sleep are what they call the “idle theory.” This theory states that the reason we sleep is due to evolution. These extra hours we all fell asleep because it served as a survival function. Another theory is the “Conservation of Energy Theory”. This theory stated that we sleep because we need to conserve our energy resources. The final theory, "the restorative theory," stated that we sleep because we need to restore what was lost in the body while we were awake. In conclusion, Harvard Medical School states that there are several reasons why we sleep. This could be due to brain development, restoration, energy conservation, or natural selection, but none of these theories have been proven yet. Another idea, from Marcus Woo (2011), is that we cannot refrain from sleeping the way we do. can eat and a number of other things. As the organism evolves, we develop additional uses for sleep. “We spend so much time sleeping that we have to do something important,” says David Prober. There are 4 main hypotheses that Marcus Woo believes are why we sleep. They are sort of the same, but they are also different.
