Essay / Free Essays on The Storm: Betrayals and Rebellions dramatic action is much more complex. Many other aspects and themes such as illusion and the supernatural (magic) also play a very important role in shaping the plot. The struggle for power is evident from the beginning, when Prospero's brother Antonio seized his status as Duke of Milan and banished him to a barren place and left him for dead. “In scene 2.1, page 141, Sebastian remarks: “I remember/You supplanted your brother Prospero. » And Antonio replies: “It’s true; / And look how well my clothes suit me”. Antonio has betrayed Prospero, and yet he feels no remorse for his treacherous act: “I do not feel/This divinity in my bosom,” his conscience is not bothered by what he has done to Prospero. Another brotherly conspiracy in the play took place in Act II when Sebastian is encouraged by Antonio to kill his brother, Alonso, which would then place him on the throne, but first, they attempted to kill Gonzalo, the Alonso's loyal advisor. Scene 2.1, p. “Come closer,/and when I raise my hand, do as/to bring it (the sword) down on Gonzalo.” Their evil plot is interrupted and their plans ruined when Ariel wakes the sleeping group (Alonso and Gonzalo). But perhaps the most striking resistance against authority comes from Caliban, Prospero's slave who believes that the island rightfully belongs to him, "the mine of the island by Sycorax my mother". He goes on to state that Prospero “takes me.” In order to regain or gain his dominance, Caliban plots with Trinculo and Stephano to kill Prospero and take over the island. Act 3, scene I, p. 160 “Well, as I told you, it’s a custom with him that I sleep in the afternoon. There you will be able to brain him After having first seized his books; or with a log Hit his skull, or hit him with a stake Or cut his butt with your knife. » An important factor in the struggle for authority is the illusion of authority, who is ultimately in control? The illusion of authority becomes evident early on when the boatswain speaks to the king in the storm; “What does the name of the king matter to these roarers?… If you can order these elements to be silent and work for the peace of the present, we will no longer hold out the rope for you – use your authority..
