"Alienation is the state or experience of being isolated from a group or activity to which one should belong or in which one should be involved"( " Definition..."). It is important to maintain relationships with the real world, otherwise it can cause mental illnesses such as forgetting what reality is. In Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, Victor and his creature both showed how relationships as well as lack of social connections can harm themselves and the people around them. Frankenstein's creature wanted to be accepted into society; however, he was neglected and his view of humans began to change: "When I call forth the appalling catalog of my deeds, I cannot believe that I am the one whose thoughts were once filled with sublime and transcendent visions of the beauty and majesty of goodness. . But it is still so; the fallen angle becomes an evil devil” (Shelly 431). The creature was kind to the family he observed and he saved the girl who almost drowned, but the people saw him as a monster. When he repeatedly tried to prove himself to society and was rejected, he sought to hurt humans. He was not in the presence of his creator to let him know that murder is not the right way to get revenge. In addition, the creature needed a friend in which he expressed himself, saying: “You must create. a woman for me, with whom I can live in the exchange of these sympathies necessary for my being? (Shelley 261). The creature lacks the love and companionship of others, so it asks the victor to create a monster like itself to gain these traits. Additionally, the creature claims that it will not cause harm to Victor's family if he creates this task for him, showing how he would change with a companion.
