  • Essay / Social Influence and Society - 1347

Society is constantly changing and people are the same. Throughout history, people have been shown to change and adapt to their environments. But a closer look reveals that there is a minority who are unwilling or unable to conform to these standards, as most people do. These people tend to be forced into isolation or to fend for themselves. This is seen throughout the colonization of America and into more recent times. The Native Americans were the first to live on this land, and when the English created a new society, the Native Americans were forced to occupy smaller and smaller plots of land until they were forced to conform or live on a reserve. The idea of this societal conformity is illustrated in “What You Pawn I Will Redeem” by Sherman Alexie, a short story author. Society's pressure to improve an individual living differently harms more than it helps. Jackson is a Native American living on the streets of Seattle. He is alone and no matter how hard he tries to form his own tribe-like community, he is always left with only himself. Jackson feels pressure from society to take on the role many natives play today. Society stereotypes natives as alcoholics who are very fickle with their money. Jackson unconsciously allows these social pressures to control his actions in his efforts to obtain his grandmother's ceremonial cover. The man who owns the pawn shop gives him money to achieve his goal, but he quickly spends it on alcohol for himself and his friends. This is an example of positive social pressure becoming negative because he feels the pressure of having a tribal community around him, which causes him to ignore the goal and focus on others. Although this may sound positive... middle of paper ...... children, then stay home and raise the children. Although this path is supposed to constitute positive pressure from society, it can lead to a difficult life for the wife and children. Sometimes these women become depressed or angry, which creates an opportunity to create an unsafe home for the children and the woman raising them. Social pressure aims to make family life happy and healthy, but can ultimately destroy the family and this is dynamic. Works CitedAlexie, Sherman. “What you pawn, I will redeem.” Comp.
