    In every story, a character's emotions are the driving force behind their actions. However, another essential element that affects the character is his sense of pride; pride can be used to cause a character to do great things or to stoop to very low levels. In Vince Shakespeare's Othello the Moor, pride is an essential element in moving the plot forward: it constitutes the main motive which pushes Iago to ruin Othello's life. In addition to being a motif, Shakespeare uses pride as the flaw of various characters that ultimately led to their downfall and demise. Overall, without pride, history simply could not happen. It's best to start with an analysis of how pride is used in character development. Pride helps the reader better understand the actions committed by the people in the story. Take for example the way Shakespeare fleshes out Cassio: “This is my old hand, this is my right hand, and this is my left. I'm not drunk now. I can stand quite well and I speak quite well” (Act 2, scene 3, lines 75). In this scene, Cassio is too proud to admit that he is actually drunk....
