  • Essay / The Great Schism, also known as the East-West Divide

    People separate then reunite; people argue and then make up. Likewise, Christianity also experiences separation meetings, arguments and reconciliations. Christianity began as one body, then multiple factors gradually contributed to the split of the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church. Some of these factors are such as different understanding of Christianity, different views on the authority of the Pope and different ideas on governance of the Church. All these different thoughts have created disagreement between the two branches of the Church. In other words, conflict erupted and ultimately led to the Great Schism. The differences between these two branches of the Church were significant because they are the result of this Great Schism. The Great Schism is also known as the East-West divide. It is obvious that this division was based on geography. The geographical problem was not the only reason, but also “cultural, political and economic factors; yet its fundamental cause was not secular but theological. » (Kallistos 43-44). Following the Great Schism, the eastern part of Europe founded the Greek-speaking Eastern Orthodox Church. The western side created the Latin-speaking Roman Catholic. Both Churches believe that they were superior to each other. The Roman Catholic Church believed that it was the mother church. In other words, it originated because it centered on the city of Rome, a place with which Peter had a deep connection. The Eastern Orthodox believed that it held the truth, even though it was not the original Church but it did hold the truth. This increased the tension of estrangement and led to conflict.
