The United States is known as the richest country in the world. But many people cannot afford to buy food for their families and many are also homeless. "While hunger affects people of all ages, it is particularly devastating for children; even short-term bouts of hunger can cause lasting damage." (“Child Nutrition Programs”) Child hunger in the United States is caused by poverty, unemployment, food insecurity, and food shortages; However, there are many solutions to this problem, such as FRAC strategies, food banks, summer food programs, and backpack feeding programs. Poverty is one of the main causes of childhood hunger. Most people living in poverty cannot afford to buy food. All the money they have goes towards housing bills. The consequences are: families are homeless, parents are uneducated, health care is too expensive, violence is common, and children do not receive a good education. Homelessness, an effect on poverty. In the United States, there is a lack of affordable housing for people. Even a minimum wage job is not enough to provide housing and food for a family with children. “Cuts in federal aid to housing programs and social services have coincided with increases in homelessness in the United States” (“Overview of Homelessness”) This means it is more difficult to obtain housing due to numerous budget cuts. Being homeless is hard on children. It is difficult for children to succeed in school because they have to move around a lot more than the average child. School may be interrupted.
