In a study done by Dr. Robert Needlman, he shows how normal it is for teenagers to not want to share their feelings with others. He states that it only becomes a problem when the adolescent has no one to share their feelings with. Then the novel Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger develops this idea with its main character. Holden is a teenager who deals with the death of his brother and deep depression. After being kicked out of school for the 4th time, we follow his lonely journey through New York. This novel features many themes regarding adolescent depression and loneliness. JD Salinger shows how loneliness leads to a buildup of unhappy emotions. Salinger also shows how adolescents suffering from depression tend to withdraw from the rest of the world. This feeling of loneliness and alienation from the world leads adolescents into a life of depression. One of the most prevalent themes in the novel The Catcher in the Rye is how loneliness affects adolescents and leads them to a buildup of unhappy emotions. Salinger shows Holden's loneliness when he tries to think of someone to talk to when he first arrives in New York. Instead, Holden goes to the phone booth and “ends up not calling anyone” (59). Holden really wants to talk to someone, but as soon as he thinks about who he could call, he either finds a reason why they wouldn't want to talk to him, or a reason why he wouldn't want to talk. for them. Later, we notice that Holden would rather talk to someone else who doesn't know him than to someone in his life. We can see how Holden's journey through New York is extremely lonely, which is sometimes due to Holden himself, and other times Holden actually wants to interact with someone, but he doesn't. won't recognize him. JD Salinger has a lot to say about how teenagers with more severe cases of depression will act like Holden does, where they close themselves off from almost everyone in their personal lives. It shows how teens who experience traumatic events in their early teens, like the death of Holden's little brother, are more likely to go down this path of depression..
