Fortunately, thanks to the brilliant minds of people all over the world, different inventions and advancements have come into being. After the war, even more immigrants came to the region as France's gift – the Statue of Liberty – became the symbol of freedom and hope for many would-be immigrants. By the late 1700s, the population had returned to 20,000. During the 1800s, New York's population grew to over 60,000 and that was just the beginning. Further afield, in the late 1800s, many more immigrants arrived in New York and they were mostly from southern and eastern Europe and China, leading to a steady increase in population (Jackson and Dunbar 362). With the different immigrants came different religions which built more churches and religious buildings, thus reinforcing the cultural diversity of New York.
