  • Essay / Frederic Henry: Code Hero - 847

A Hemingway Code Hero is a trait possessed by almost every main character in Ernest Hemingway's novels. According to Hemingway, a Code Hero is a man (or woman) who lives right and demonstrates respect for honor and courage in a chaotic and stressful world. There is a particular pattern to how a Code Hero goes about their daily life. In the novel A Farewell to Arms, Frederic Henry is the hero of the code because fate plays a determining role in the events of his life, he lives in the here and now, and he shows grace under pressure. The first and most specific trait that Frederic Henry illustrates is that fate plays a determining role in the events of his life. Fate governs almost every major event in the novel. Frédéric's entire life is due to fate and chance. Before the war, Frédéric wandered without much purpose. His family sends him money to live on and he is spoiled. He enlists in the Italian army simply because he is there when they go to war. He meets Catherine through the fate of the British nurses stationed at her unit's hospital. When Frédéric is injured by Austrian fire, it is simply by chance that Catherine is also transferred there. Fate sends Frederick back to the front in a retreat, and fate brings him to the checkpoint which puts his life in danger. The men execute officers for abandoning their men, so Henry jumps into the river and fate is what keeps him alive. He finds Catherine and fate allows them to stay safe while they run to Switzerland. However, the fate that governs Henry's life is rather unforgiving towards the couple. Fate decides to give Catherine a difficult birth which ends in a stillbirth and Catherine's death. Many of these events are beyond Frederick's control and are just a... middle of paper ... because the hero Hemingway doesn't often talk about his beliefs, he just shows them. It does not glorify death with the hope of life after death. Frédéric Henry takes death for what it is. Although Henry is afraid of the unknown, he is not afraid of the process of death because he has lived his life exactly as a hero from the Hemingway Code would want. Frederick Henry follows the guidelines and meets the characteristics of a hero from the Hemingway Code, but in reality, Catherine Barkley is the original hero of the story. Throughout the novel, she transmits these traits to Frederick who assumes the role of the Code Hero in her death. The actions Frederick takes and the things he says and believes define him in this book and leave a lasting impression. Frederic Henry may not be the original Code Hero, but he certainly deserves the title thanks to his actions..
