Essay / Failure of the American Dream in Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby...
Failure in Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby In Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, all the characters try, in one way or another, to become more happy in their life. The characters in the novel are divided into two groups: the rich upper class and the poorer lower class (West Egg and East Egg). Although the main characters are only trying to improve their lives, the American dream they are all trying to achieve eventually comes true. ruined by the harsh reality of life. Rich couple Tom and Daisy Buchanan seem to have everything they could want. Although their lives are full of everything you can imagine, they are unhappy and looking to change, Tom drifts "always searching somewhat wistfully for the dramatic turbulence of an unrecoverable football match" (p. 10 ) and reads "deep books with long books." words in them” (p. 17) just so he has something to say. Even though Tom is married to Daisy, he is having an affair with Myrtle Wilson and has an apartment with her in New York. Daisy is an empty character, someone who has almost no beliefs or desires. Even before her relationships with Tom or Gatsby are seen, Daisy does nothing but sit around all day and wonder what to do with herself and her friend Jordan. She knows that Tom is having an affair, but she doesn't leave him even when she learns that Gatsby loves her. Daisy lets Gatsby know that she too is in love with him but cannot bring herself to say goodbye to Tom, except when Gatsby forces her too. Even then, once Tom begs her to stay, even then, Daisy leaves Gatsby forever for his old life of comfort. Daisy and Tom are perfect examples of wealth and prosperity, and the American dream. Yet their lives are empty and aimless. Although Myrtle Wilson tries to escape her own class and seek happiness with the rich, she ends up earning nothing and eventually dies. She is basically a victim of the group she wanted to join. Myrtle tries to become like Tom by having an affair with him and adopting his lifestyle, but in doing so she becomes dissatisfied with her life. Her constant changes of clothes show that she is not satisfied with her life, she changes her personality every time she changes her dress: "under the influence of the dress, her whole personality also underwent a change"..
