Many of these protocols cause extreme suffering in the animal. The animals are forced into isolation and only get social interactions when they are poked and prodded. Scientists will starve or even dehydrate the animals. Worse yet, if animals are kept alive from one experiment to the next, they receive no recovery time between tests. They are forced into constraints that prevent them from moving as they fight for their lives. Restraints typically attach to the animal's head, neck, legs and/or pelvis. Animals can be kept in total immobilization for weeks or even months. Often, the people in the laboratories responsible for analyzing the animals lack the experience and training to keep the animal alive and free from pain. Some staff members lack the sensitivity to prevent the suffering an animal is forced to endure. “Vivisection is one of the worst forms of institutionalized animal abuse in our society, and it is a sanctioned and legal abuse” (neavs.org). Millions of animals are used and killed in animal testing in the United States alone. Many animals will never experience the outside world.
