  • Essay / The Blue Door by Andrew Wyeth - 880

The Blue Door was painted by American artist Andrew Wyeth on a 29 inch by 21 inch piece of watercolor paper. In this painting he used watercolor as it is currently in the Delaware Art Museum with his other works; Tennant Farmer, Hussey's House and Arthur Cleveland. The Blue Door was completed in the spring of 1952 and purchased from Wyeth on September 23 of that year. The floor and walls are mainly made of wood/ceramic panels parallel to each other. The surface of each (floor and walls) is assumed to have gone through several decades intact and unrepaired because it is rough and dirty. The light source is obviously the window to the right of the door as it illuminates parts of the door, the walls, the floor, the basket and the bucket. The bucket hangs on the nail attached to the wall between the door and the window and there is a basket under the window placed on a ceramic surface. The blue door is worn with age as it shows signs of peeling and reflects off the light emanating from the window. Contrast is the easiest design principle to spot because there is a great use of notan in the painting and a distinction between the light from the window and the dark room. There are radial and asymmetrical balances in this image as the ground designs are parallel and repetitive, therefore being symmetrical and no part is repeated in the overall overview of this painting. Wyeth also uses line to draw the viewer's attention to the door, as the lines of the floor, walls, ceiling, and windows all point toward the door. Andrew then uses contrast and line to emphasize the door as it is the focal point of the painting. Positive and negative space is created through the outline of the door and its surroundings by Wyeth. In the Blue Door, the painter...... middle of paper ...... looked at life from a mental and spiritual point of view, did he love his craft and how he mastered his painting techniques. The wide range of tints and shades of many colors were mixed to create the designated appearance, but how he mixed his palette and created these colors to perfection without making a mistake, all can be revealed by the master to him -even ?
