The unsympathetic character of Byelinkov in The Man in an AffairIt is difficult to sympathize with a person who completely lacks happiness in his life. In The Man in a Case by Wendy Wasserstein, Byelinkov leads a boring and uneventful life, with which only he is content. He does the exact same routine every day and has done this routine most of his life. Byelinkov's tedious life is expressed throughout the play through comments made to Varinka, as well as through his daily habits and rituals. Byelinkov is a Latin and Greek teacher at the local school in the village of Mironitsky. He is well respected and known by many people throughout the village for his vast knowledge. Byelinkov translates many stories and documents every week and can only concentrate on his work when he is alone, which is why he spends most of his time in solitude. Byelinkov is engaged to Varinka, whose personality, on the other hand, is the complete opposite of his. own. She lives moment by moment, while he plans everything.
