To say that a cookie-cutter ideal for an American family ever existed is to ignore the struggles of many different groups and subcultures in America. America is a land of immigrants and home to a great wealth of diversity, each with their own perceptions and opinions on family culture. The U.S. Census Bureau describes a family as "a group of two or more people (one of whom is the head of the household) related by birth, marriage, or adoption and residing together." This definition encompasses many forms of family structures that have existed in America for many years and will continue to exist. However, the difference now is that America has become increasingly progressive and inclusive of all people, such as LGBT and racial minorities, as shown by the US Census report on the growth of minority-owned homes.
