Essay / The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare - 821
Petruchio openly courts his wife to be Kate; However, Bianca's three other suitors take a different approach. The three suitors, Lucentio, Gremio and Hortensio, all secretly try to woo Bianca, but the strategies and plans they make are all very different. Petruchio appears more manly for courting Kate openly; However, the smartest of the three suitors appears to be Lucentio. Petruchio agrees to marry Kate, but only because he wants to have a good time and have a rich wife. Petruchio appears manly as he openly woos Kate and asks her to kiss him and celebrate their engagement. Petruchio says sweet words to Kate such as, “Is this wrong? Come, my sweet Kate. / Better once than never, because never too late” (Vi130-131). Petruchio is brave enough to tell Kate's father, Baptista, that he and Kate are in love and are getting married as soon as possible. The way Petruchio woos a woman is significantly more manly than the three suitors woo Bianca for her hand. Petruchio doesn't take no for an answer from Kate either; and, when she rejects him; he always acts like she loves him. When Kate hits him and insults Petruchio, he responds only with polite responses and compliments. Petruchio does not easily abandon Kate, saying: “Alas, good Kate, I will not burden you! For, knowing you young and light” (II.i.1050). A real man only compliments a shrew. The way Petruchio shows his feelings for Kate and willingly accepts all her shrewd behavior without complaint is the behavior of a real man. He also shows his anger after marrying Kate by starving her and training her to obey his orders. His aggressive actions show his manly side, but also his bestial side. Petruchio's boldness and manly nature seduces Kate, and... middle of paper ... the way Hortensio tries to win Bianca's heart by singing to woo and marry her is exaggerated and clichéd. Hortensio is clever in wooing her with music, but not as clever as Lucentio who woos her with words of love and romance. Gremio really has no chance due to his age and lack of money. Gremio also unknowingly helps Lucentio as he hired Lucentio to be Bianca's schoolmaster, giving him the chance to woo Bianca. Lucentio is the most intelligent of the three suitors because he is able to deceive Gremio and marries her in secret. Lucentio is the smartest of the suitors as he runs away with Bianca capturing her and cuts off the other suitors' opportunity to woo her, thus making her his. Petruchio is the manliest of the suitors because he openly courts Kate and Lucentio is the smartest because his plan definitely works..
