  • Essay / The True Representation of Shiloh - 1039

The parallels between a marriage bond and war are analogous to each other. Difficulties are generally experienced on both battlefields. Mason makes few interesting points regarding these adversities in his attractive short story, “Shiloh.” The reason why this story sparks interest in the reader's mind is because it is told from a limited third-person point of view. We are able to understand the trials and tribulations of history, but we can only understand them through the way Leroy imagines and represents them. All of Leroy's tribulations with his wife come down to a final scene at the end of this fascinating love saga. This love saga consists of a powerful internal conflict that envelops the reader's mind in an exciting chapter in the couple's life; a chapter which later defines the parallel between marriage and war. Love and War are impossible to compile, but they can be understood. Mason's use of imagery is quite unique in this story. Even though he uses simple, almost illiterate language, he is able to convey a message that is undeniably thought-provoking. The tone given to the reader from the first page is rather macabre. Leroy's conversation with Norma Jean ends abruptly after their brief exchange of words. The narrator explains Leroy's physical problems and personal thoughts through Leroy's point of view, as I mentioned before. Although Leroy's aspiration to build this log house for Norma Jean is his main focus throughout this short story, it seems that the house is actually just a distraction from the real problem at hand, disconnection . The perception of Leroy's attempt to rekindle the fire of his marriage seems entirely innocent and almost "childish", which is ironic because this quality...... middle of paper ......where Leroy was sitting, puffing his joint. There lay, right before him, the meaning of life and what he had become in particular. The battlefield of Shiloh is filled with all sorts of grooves and curves within the realm of infrastructure and architecture, and these grooves and curves represent the adversities of a marriage. Even if we don't understand why everything happens on a battlefield, we can admire the fact that the outcome will change that of the generation to come. This same principle also applies to marital boundaries. Even if we don't immediately understand why a family faced some adversity, we must face the fact that obstacles are only human when faced with obstacles in the marriage bond. Marriage is a battlefield of its own, filled with unpredictable and silent obstacles ready to embody our moment of life..
