IntroDo you believe people are born homosexuals? “It’s so gay.” seems to have permanently entered the vernacular of heterosexual adolescents in many schools, but what does gay really mean (Did you know). Three to four percent of men and one to two percent of women are gay in America (Cameron). There are pros and cons to answering the question of whether people are born gay. Is homosexuality caused by a gay germ, developmental disorders, being raised by heterosexual parents, sexual abuse, or are humans born gay? LGTBQLGBTQ is an acronym called queer or gay. “L” stands for lesbian. A lesbian is a woman attracted to members of the same sex. “G” sounds like gay, meaning someone who has sexual or romantic attractions to members of the same gender or sex. The second term for the “G” stands for Genderqueer. A Genderqueer is someone who feels that he or she does not fit into society's binary gender system. Bisexual is the “B” in LGBTQ. A bisexual is a person who has sexual or romantic attractions to members of the same gender and/or sex and another gender and/or sex, or who identifies as a member of the bisexual community. The first term for “T” is transgender. Transgender is a person who transgresses gender norms and identifies as transgender. The “T” also stands for transsexual, which is someone who changes their sex to align with the identity of another. A queer, or the first "Q" in LGBTQ, is derogatory slang co-opted by a person to refer to the sexual minority community. Questioning is the term for the second “Q” in this acronym. Questioning is when someone is questioning their sexual identity and/or orientation preferences (Residential Life UMKC: LGBTQ Students).
