  • Essay / Loss of Freedom in The Giver Essay - 864

Loss of Freedom in The GiverThe Giver, a book written by Lois Lowry, challenged my ideas, thoughts and beliefs. The novel describes an ideal society, in which everything is supposed to be perfect and all of life's problems are solved. It's about being happy with what people have and not questioning their lifestyle because they don't know the difference between right and wrong. People are deprived of their preferable way of life without knowing how the real world is supposed to be. In the real world, I live every day to learn and gain as much freedom as possible. However, the citizens of this society are not able to control their lives; for example their choice of clothing, their choice to love and feel, or their choice of family members. We humans differ from all existing creatures because we are able to use our brains to make decisions. In the novel, members of a given society have authority figures who show them how to live their lives. “Katya, became a Nine, took off her hair ribbons and took her bike” (P. 14). Therefore, this previous quote refers to how people are controlled. They have no say in their own lifestyle. The rules start with little things like what age you start riding a bike, what age group wears certain types of jackets, what clothes you wear each day, and even what to eat. In the real world, we humans make similar decisions ourselves without thinking about them. People need guidance in their lives to find the right lifestyle, but not an instruction book. Many...... middle of paper ...... don't really understand the word to describe the whole feeling, The Giver told him that the feeling that was so strong in the room was love" ( P.125). Family in the novel is described as a group of people who have a unity or bond that they share together every day. In the real world, the family is more than a unit; it’s care and above all love. In conclusion, life without experience and memory is meaningless. When all freedom is taken away from an individual, they will not strive to create a better future. These people do not have the freedom to choose their future. From the success, the family and its individuality were taken into account. Additionally, most people actually need love and happiness to carry on and survive. While we try to reshape our lives with all scientific methods, we forget the most important parts of nature..
