Infidelity and betrayal were important issues in Kate Chopin's book, The Tempest, which describes real-life problems. In this essay I intend to address how detrimental the subject of sex was in Choplins The Storm and compare and contrast it with how it is presented in James Carr's "Dark end of the Street.” These songs compare because they are about infidelity and betrayal of a loved one. However, these two also differ in some ways, such as how the cheater feels after what has been done. Whether it’s gratification or regret. Infidelity plays an important role in the book The Storm by Kate Chopins. The book is mainly about a major storm that hits Louisiana and leaves many people trapped in their homes. The main character, Calixta, is cooped up at home alone, worried about his brother, Bibi, and his father Bobinot, who are stuck trying to wait out the storm at a local store. While Calixta is home alone with an ex-boyfriend, Alcee passes by and finds herself stuck with her at her house. As the storm continues, Calixta no longer pays attention to the storm and worries about her family members, as she and Alcee begin kissing, which leads to sex. After the storm is over, Alcee leaves and a member of the Calixta family returns home. Later in the story we find out that Alcee had a wife who was on a trip, but he told her to stay on a trip longer. The sexual acts between Calixta and Alcee throughout the book depict the act of infidelity. The song I chose, “Dark End of the Street,” is also similar to the book because its main subject is infidelity. In this song we see two lovers stealing moments, knowing they are doing the wrong thing, but unable to stop themselves from meeting.
