  • Essay / Oedipus the King by Sophocles - 983

Fate is the power that controls all humanity. There is no escape from events predetermined for man; free will does not exist. Every decision one makes is not one's own choice, but rather an inevitable course of action planned and determined by a higher power. Sometimes prophets or oracles can show the destiny of others, such as the oracle of Delphi which speaks the words of Apollo, the god of light and the sun. This specific oracle revealed the prophecy of a man named Oedipus, he is intelligent, he is heroic, but more than any other trait, he is cursed. Oedipus learns that he will murder his father and one day marry his mother who will in turn give birth to his children. That's exactly what happened: he ran away from his adoptive parents, killed his real father, and won his mother's hand by defeating the Sphinx. But in the end, Oedipus had no idea that he had ruined his family, and once he saw the truth, he cut out his eyes and exiled himself from Thebes. Since the dawn of time, the Immortals of Greece have anticipated the birth of Oedipus; Throughout his life: birth, adolescence and adulthood, the Gods knew his destiny and forced him to fulfill his painful prophecy. Indeed, the men and women of Olympus, the Greek gods as they are often called, chose Oedipus' destiny. since his very first breath. Oedipus' prophecy was originally told to his father, who in turn took every precaution to stop it. This can be demonstrated by the actions of Laius from the point of view of Jocasta, Laius's wife: An oracle came to Laius one fine day (I won't say from Apollo himself but from his subordinates, from his priests ) and he said that fate would be fatal. strike him down from the hands of a son, our son, who will be born...... middle of paper ......ht alongside poor Oedipus. Furthermore, they will never leave until all that is prophesied is fulfilled. As was stated earlier in the piece: "Now as we watch and wait for the last day, I count no man happy until he dies, free at last from pain", this quote illustrates the story of Oedipus because nothing less than death. can free Oedipus from the involvement of the Gods in his tragic life (1683-1684). From his first taste of air to his last; Oedipus — The string puppet of destiny. He had no way to break the strings, he escaped death, ran away from home, just to take his father's life and marry his mother; The irony? He didn't know it until the damage was done. So overall, everyone knows when their life begins, but no one knows when it ends. . . or what happens in the middle. Works Cited Oedipus the King by Sophocles; Translated by Robert Fagles
