Essay / How reading emerges - 803
1. Choose a book and evaluate it using the checklist in Figure 9.2 in your text. Rate the effectiveness of the book and explain how you would use it with young children. How would you encourage parents to implement each of the nine reading aloud suggestions that Tracey made to improve the quality of reading a book like this to children? Be specific. Choosing predictable multicultural books is helpful in developing reading skills. There are so many different books to offer to children. Children enjoy reading books with repetitive and rhyming words. Stories with repetitive words help children remember words. Multicultural books have cumulative episodes. Books with cumulative episodes contain words that children must memorize and they begin to pronounce them on their own. Parents should read to children and show them the pictures in the book, because “the pictures clearly illustrate the words, lines, and episodes” (Beaty & Pratt, 2011). Parents can teach their children how to create sequential patterns. For example, in the book Chicka Chika Boom Boom, children are able to tell which letter comes next. Parents can be encouraged to read their children's favorite books. Reading the same book over and over helps children learn certain skills. Children learn the order of the story. Children are able to keep pace with their parents reading stories. Children also learn to remember what they read in the story. According to the book, children develop a sense of story sequence, how to follow the book while reading the story, and how to memorize words. Therefore, reading the same story over and over again is good for the child. Children should be able to participate in story time. You should encourage children to read middle of paper....... Children also like books that like rhythm. Children enjoy these books because they can participate in the reading. A book that comes to mind when I think of children is “If You're Happy and You Know It”. This book allows children to jump up and down, clap their hands and stomp their feet. Parents should provide their children with different multicultural books. These books can help children learn different things. Multicultural books can help young children learn about the different characters in a book. Some multicultural books may have different characters with rhyming names. For example, a book might be called Silly Willey hits Billy. Children would enjoy this book because the name appeals to children. My children enjoy reading with me because I make sure they pay attention to what I read. They have to answer questions and tell me what the story is about.
