Essay / Discrimination against Latino and Hispanic Immigrants because of where you were born? Discrimination still exists! “Discrimination remains and there is an increase in hate crimes against Hispanics, Latinos and Mexican-Americans, while one of the perceived symbols of this discrimination, the US-Mexico border fence, is nearing completion. Instead of coming together in these difficult times, we may see a greater polarization of attitudes” (Gibson). But why are hate crimes against Latino and Hispanic foreigners increasing and what types of discrimination are being practiced against them? Understanding violence against Hispanic and Latino aliens is divided into three main classes: the difference between legal and illegal aliens, attacks and effects, and different people's views towards foreigners. “Immigration is the term used to describe the action and process by which a citizen of one country moves to another country after applying for residency in that country. (Martinez). An immigrant, also called a foreigner, is one or more people from a foreign country. Foreigners are divided into two main categories: legal foreigners and illegal foreigners. But what are the differences between the two? Legal aliens owe allegiance to the country. In America, foreigners have the option to become legal either by having a green card or by becoming a U.S. citizen and having dual citizenship. Green card holders are permanent residents who have been authorized to live and work legally in the United States, but they are not U.S. citizens. To become a citizen, you must be legal, fluent in English, have a clean criminal record, and go to middle of paper...their job” (immigration p. 63). Hispanics respond by commenting on how they "take jobs Americans don't want." Hispanics say they come here to have a better life for their families and themselves as well as a job. Americans say Hispanics are criminals, drug dealers, etc. and that they should stay in their country. Yes, it is true that Hispanics are generally in gangs; go to prison, do drugs, etc. But Hispanics say they start doing this kind of thing because they don't have money to take care of their family, so generally they will do anything for their children to have a good life. The different POV arguments are endless. Discrimination still exists in our world. People are mistreated, bullied, abused, etc. because where they were born is a serious issue that needs to be changed. Characteristics and personality are what people are supposed to see in a person, not their appearance..
