Essay / Advantages and disadvantages of accountability providing evidence to support theories or to predict future outcomes based on scientific research. These methods or research are generally accepted in natural sciences like chemistry and physics. Indeed, unlike the social sciences, they generally use well-designed formulas, structures and methods (Guttin, 2012). However, when it comes to social sciences, researchers typically work using theories by formulating hypotheses and conducting research to prove or disprove the theories. In doing so, social scientists typically become advocates for this cause in certain circumstances. This article highlights some of the pros and cons of scientists becoming advocates, and provides examples of when social scientists become advocates and situations in which they observe objectivity. Becoming advocates for social scientists has both advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, Gutting (2012) states that it can complement general knowledge, critical intensity, practical experience and common sense. Gutting also says that scientists know where a certain work fits within their relevant discipline. This allows them to be good defenders. Taking sides also allows social scientists to help combat harmful behaviors by researching their harmful effects and discouraging those behaviors with facts. Examples are the effects of substance abuse and addiction, risky sexual behaviors, etc. On the other hand, the disadvantages of becoming an advocate are: (1) Overgeneralization - this occurs when research...... middle of paper ..... .observe and report the facts as 'they are given by both sides without interfering with any data. Indeed, people may base their decision to adhere to a certain religion on the results, only to be wrong due to the researcher's lack of objectivity. ReferencesCorn-Revere, R (2011).
